Entertaining with Emotion

BeforeIFall

What to Watch in the Theater:
Before I Fall (PG13) is now in theaters. Serious take on the Groundhog Day premise, which turned out to be a good thing. We were engaged the whole way through, watching this young woman grow and change. Be warned – this is definitely a tearjerker.
Our rating: 4.5 out of 5

kong

Kong: Skull Island (PG13) opens today. We weren’t looking forward to yet another King Kong, but this one brought something fresh to the story. Big budget action film fans will not be disappointed, but there’s also a great origin story here, with believable characters and just enough heart to muster up some emotions, without being overdone. Great soundtrack, and one of the scariest reptile monsters we’ve ever seen.
Our rating: 4.5 out of 5

What to Watch at Home (Or Not):
Maximum Ride (PG13) Disappointing take on a YA book series. The acting and effects were seriously lacking. The story was compelling and made us want more, but better.
Our rating: 2 out of 5

The Whole Truth (R) Keanu Reeves shows his usual lack of range in this courtroom drama. This is the serious Keanu, minus the action scenes, not the dopey, fun Keanu. The story built nicely, with some good twists, but KR’s voiceover killed the mood every time.

Finding a Way

RockDog

What to Watch in the Theater:
Rock Dog (PG) is now in theaters. Fun animated film with some story resemblance to Kung Fu Panda 3. Good music and message, solid family entertainment value.
Our rating: 4 out of 5

Logan

Logan (R) opens today. Over the top on the R-rated violence, so be prepared for lots of blood and decapitation. Interesting plot that opens up a new story line for the X-Men franchise. Saddest film in the franchise – it was more emotional than expected.
Our rating: 4.5 out of 5

What to Watch at Home (Or Not):
The Magnificent Seven (PG13) Great cast, good story. It may not save the entire Western genre, but it does provide good entertainment. As expected, the body count is high, with lots of gun and knife fights, but little gore. Solid performances all around.
Our rating: 4 out of 5

Don’t Think Twice (R) Drama about a comedy improv group, and how their lives change when one of their own moves on. Interesting look behind the scenes at what it takes to create comedy, group dynamics and personality differences. A little slow, but if you’re a fan of improv, you’ll get something out of it.

GetOut

What to Watch in the Theater:
Get Out (R) opens today. Excellent combination of suspense and humor, with more twists than you can imagine. There’s a bit of well-placed gore, and this one will keep you on the edge of your seat till the very end. Jordan Peele has found his new calling!
Our rating: 5 out of 5

What to Watch at Home (Or Not):
Deepwater Horizon (PG13) Solid disaster movie, based on a true story. It’s understandable why BP didn’t want this made. Extra kudos for Mark Wahlberg going accent-less.
Our rating: 4 out of 5

Little Men (PG) Interesting movie about how a friendship can change. Not overly long, but still seems to drag.
Our rating: 3 out of 5

No One Ever Leaves

JW2

What to Watch in the Theater:
John Wick: Chapter 2 (R) is now in theaters. Solid sequel with even more graphic violence. Although his actions in the last movie were only for personal vengeance, his former business just won’t let him go back into retirement.
Our rating: 4 out of 5

ACFW

A Cure for Wellness (R) opens today. Just when you think you’ve got it figured out, this movie pulls another twist, and just keeps going and going. Entertaining but sometimes painful to watch, this one will keep you guessing – and grossed out – till the end.
Our rating: 4.125 out of 5

What to Watch at Home (Or Not):
Kevin Hart: What Now? (R) Love the characters Kevin Hart plays in movies? Well, except for a clever James Bond-style intro piece, this film features none of those characters. Kevin’s stand up style may not be your cup of tea. Some funny moments, but we were disappointed at how different this Kevin was.
Our rating: 3.25 out of 5

I.T. (unrated) Rich guy Pierce Brosnan mistakenly hires a temp from his office to fix his home network, putting his family and business in danger. This movie won’t make you feel any better about technology taking over your home. What are you waiting for? Go cover your webcam!
