Lots to Choose from This Holiday Season

What to Watch in the Theater:
Passengers (PG13) is in theaters now. Just the right amount of romance, comedy, drama and adventure, with great leading actors. Appreciate that it lacked killer aliens, anti-human robots, and other cheesy scifi devices.
Our rating: 4.33 out of 5

Sing (PG) is in theaters now. Fun family film with a great cast of characters and good music.
Our rating: 4.42 out of 5

Why Him? (R) opens today. Even though it’s full of profanity, this movie is really entertaining. Lots of laugh out loud moments throughout.
Our rating: 5 out of 5

What to Watch at Home:
Hairspray Live! (TVPG) A fun, high-energy production. They had some sound issues, but that couldn’t dampen the spirit of this production.
Our rating: 4 out of 5

Holiday Blockbusters and Wishes

La La Land

What to Watch in the Theater:
La La Land (PG13) opens nationwide today. Modern day story filmed as a throwback musical. Impressive song and dance numbers enhance a touching story about two misfits finding love, as they try to find their place in Hollywood.
Our rating: 4.83 out of 5

rogueone

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (PG13) opens today. Fills the gap between Episodes 3 and 4 quite nicely. Strong female lead among a full pack of not very fleshed out male characters. Could have had stronger music, but great new droid and some iconic appearances make up for any drawbacks.
Our rating: 4.5 out of 5

What to Watch at Home:
Holiday Joy (TVY7) Reminiscent of It’s a Wonderful Life, the lead character, a teen named Joy, sees what life would be like if she belonged to a neighboring family instead of her own. Well played by Bailee Madison, but not a lot of Christmas in the movie.
Our rating: 3.5 out of 5

Wish for Christmas (PG) Similar premise (teen dislikes her life, wishes it were different), but with serious religious overtones. A little long, but lessons were definitely learned.
Our rating: 3.33 out of 5

Party Like It’s an Adults-Only Christmas

What to Watch in the Theater:
Bad Santa 2 (R) is in theaters now. Missing a chunk of time between installments, but otherwise as entertaining and inappropriate as the first one.
Our rating: 4 out of 5

ocpposter

Office Christmas Party (R) opens today. Great cast in a fun movie full of over-the-top partying, so this is another one just for the grown-ups.
Our rating: 4.5 out of 5

What to Watch at Home:
The Night Before (R) Male buddy stoner movie with ugly holiday sweaters. This one’s got rampant drug use and adult situations, so another inappropriate one.
Our rating: 3 out of 5

Christmas with the Kranks (PG) Finally, a holiday party the whole family can enjoy! It’s a throwback to between Tim Allen’s Santa stints, with a lot of familiar faces. Our rating: 3.67 out of 5

Seaworthy New Princess

What to Watch in the Theater:
Moana (PG) is in theaters now. Instant Disney classic, with a strong female lead (new princess!) and great music.

JACKIE_1Sheet_ONLINE_4R2_MoreRed.indd

Jackie (R) opens today. Sad biopic with disturbing images of the Kennedy assassination. Interesting from a historical perspective.

What to Watch at Home:
The Legend of Tarzan (PG13) Sometimes a new take on an old story just doesn’t sit well. Stunning images, some good casting and an 8-pack are it’s only saving graces, but that may not be enough.

Cafe Society (PG13) This Woody Allen period piece has a great cast but falls a little flat in some areas.

Plus box office results, movie news, what’s out on DVD & Blu-Ray, and more!
