Now You Should See Both

NYSM2Poster

What to Watch in the Theater:
Now You See Me 2 (PG13) opens today. This sequel is just as magical as the original, AND we get a closer look at the characters, including some new ones. If you haven’t seen Now You See Me, watch that first.

What to Watch at Home:
Hell and Back (R)  The consensus is to skip this one, which is a real disappointment considering how much we LOVE stop motion animation. Note to film makers: Just because you CAN make something really adult, doesn’t mean you SHOULD. Note to MST3000 fans: If you give this the MST3000 treatment, we’d love to see it.

Fifty Shades of Black (R)  Spoof movies are better when they spoof multiple movies, otherwise there’s no connection if you haven’t seen the one movie they’re referencing. Skip this one, UNLESS you’ve seen Fifty Shades of Grey.

Crime Fighters, a Fairytale and a Mockumentary

TMNT2Poster

What to Watch in the Theater:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (PG13) opens today. A little more violent than most TMNT properties, and Megan Fox doesn’t do much, but the kiddies will still eat it up. Turtles are relatable heroes, especially when they’re teenagers.

Alice2Poster

Alice Through the Looking Glass (PG) is in theaters now. The premise brings in new characters and provides some interesting backstory on the ones we already knew. Steampunk time travel and the personification of Time are some of the highlights.

PopstarPoster

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (R) opens today. Hilarious mockumentary with good music (full of foul language) and a cast full of amazing cameos. You have to be into SNL and Lonely Island-type humor to enjoy this.

What to Watch at Home:
Moonwalkers (R)  Apparently not all British comedies about the 60s are funny. This one is full of stoners and nudists, and an interesting premise that falls flat. Only worth a watch if you’re a REALLY big “Clockwork Orange” fan. Otherwise, skip it.

Best Laid Plans of Mutants and Women

XmenPoster

What to Watch in the Theater:
X-Men: Apocalypse (PG13) opens today. The most destructive X-Man movie ever, it won’t disappoint fans of the franchise. It’s getting a little harder to keep track of all the characters…

MaggiesPlanPoster

Maggie’s Plan (R) is available in limited release. An unusual story about a quirky character, featuring a great cast.

What to Watch at Home:
Legend (R) An interesting story that is well acted by Tom Hardy in twin roles, but the accents are very distracting.
The Angriest Man in Brooklyn (R) There’s an eerie similarity between Robin Williams’ last films, that is unsettling. This one is entertaining, with some interesting relationships, but is a little uncomfortable to watch.

Teamwork Trumps Anger

AngryBirdsPoster

What to Watch in the Theater:
The Angry Birds Movie (PG) opens today. It’s a fun ride, even if you haven’t played the game. Likable characters on a mission plus the cutest baby birds.

Neighbors2Poster

Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising (R) opens today. This sequel is nearly identical to the original, with a different gender of partiers. Entertaining, if you enjoy gross-out adult-themed stoner humor.

What to Watch at Home:
A Brilliant Young Mind (PG13) An interesting coming of age story with a twist, loosely based on a true story.
The Transporter Refueled (PG13) A reboot with an interesting premise, that makes us want to see the original trilogy.
